'Standing Strong'

Alcohol and other drugs have the biggest effects on communities from children right through to Elders. Communities are being led by strong community Elders who have enforced community controlled alcohol restrictions for remote communities in NT, WA, QLD and South Australia. Places that are in high tourist areas and in the regional and urban cities, face massive challenges brought on by binge drinking and substance abuse, causing complex problems ranging from serious health and social issues to domestic violence and assault issues.

Our dance and music video projects are a perfect tool to guide each of the communities through an engaging and powerful creative process which is done ‘By Community, for Community’ exploring all of the themes surrounding alcohol and drugs.

Exploring and brainstorming with the groups in each community, key themes were:

  • Binge drinking
  • Underage drinking
  • Bad choices
  • Domestic violence
  • FASD
  • Expensive (hurts families wallets)
  • Cause of chronic disease other health problems
  • Cause of mental health problems
  • Cause of problems with the law
  • Kids imitating ‘copy cat’ behaviour
  • People stressing out for drugs and alcohol
  • Effects your fitness, effects sport and hunting
  • Drink driving
  • Manage your drinking, drink water in between, eat a meal when you drink, drink light

(Try to create individual community action plans around drugs and alcohol)
