The Indigenous Youth Mobility Program (IYMP)

Shepparton, Victoria

The Indigenous Youth Mobility Program (IYMP) is a program offering Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander youth from remote communities, a chance to study or work in a different community whilst living in safe and supported accommodation.

There are a few different ways a young person can participate in IYMP. These include studying full time at TAFE, or doing an apprenticeship or a traineeship.

Our program is based in Shepparton, Victoria, and has very close ties with the members of our local community. In particular our local Aboriginal community, the Bangerang & Yorta Yorta people, has a major role in our program in various ways. The Rumbalara Aboriginal Co-operative provides assistance with health and dental issues. Rumbalara Football Netball Club provide a place for young men to play footy and young women to try out their netball skills! The club is a family oriented environment with social events scheduled throughout the year.

Our IYMP participants are able to stay at the IYMP house run by Aboriginal Hostels Limited. The hostel provides safe and supported accommodation and is run by a House manager who resides at the house with the participants. At a reasonable rate the participants will be provided meals, and are able to have access to kitchen & laundry facilities, computer & tv/games & study support.

Throughout their time in the program, participants are encouraged to keep family well informed of their experiences and are able to visit home. We encourage family members to visit participants here in Shepparton so that families can get a better understanding as to what IYMP is all about!

Our participants in IYMP are invited to attend our Participant nights where we do heaps of activities, including bowling, movies, out for dinner & BBQs at the house. We also provide weekend trips away to the city, and other country regions. Participants are given a membership to our local gym and pool, as well as provided with some fitness equipment at the hostels.
